Should solar lights be switched off in winter?

As a rule: No, switching off is not necessary - but it depends on the type of lamp and the location.

• Why not just leave them switched on? Most modern solar lamps are equipped with a twilight sensor. They only switch on when it is dark - and only when enough energy has been stored. If there is not enough sunlight in winter, the lamps automatically light up for less time or not at all - this does not harm the technology.
• When is it still worth switching off? In permafrost or heavy snowfall: moisture and frost damage the battery in the long term. If the lights are not winter-proof, switching them off and storing them in a dry place is a good choice. If the battery regularly runs out completely: This can shorten the life of the battery in the long term. In this case: Switch off, charge (e.g. indoors with USB - for suitable models), store in a dry place.

Recommendation:

• Winter-proof solar lamps can remain outside - even when switched on.
• Non-winterproof models should be switched off, cleaned dry and stored in a protected place.
• Check the battery regularly and charge if necessary to avoid deep discharge.
