From protection class IP21 to IP65: using recessed spotlights for the right zone

Using the bathroom as an example, you can recognise three different zones for which you should select a recessed spotlight with the appropriate protection class:

• Zone 1 (area directly around the bath or shower):

In this area, recessed spotlights with protection rating IP45 or higher should be used. Particularly recommended here is a single-flame recessed aluminium light in black with IP65 protection rating, which offers a high level of water protection and can be safely installed near showers and bathtubs. IP65 recessed spotlights are the best choice if you want to play it safe in wet environments.

• Zone 2 (area up to 0.6 metres around the bath or shower):

For this area, the light used should have at least an IP44 protection rating. We recommend the 3 LED recessed spotlight set IP44 in a matt chrome finish. It is ideal for zone 2 because it offers a high level of protection against splashing water and can be located near washbasins and showers.

• Zone 3 (area from 2.4 metres away from water sources):

How many recessed spotlights do I need per square metre?

For a room height of up to 2.5 metres, you need an average light intensity of 300-400 lumens per square metre. In rooms with a height of 2.5 to 3.5 metres, you should look for a higher number of lumens, such as 500-600 lumens. For very high ceilings over 3.5 metres, it may be necessary to increase both the number of spotlights and their luminous intensity to 700 lumens or more per spotlight.

What is the best way to arrange my ceiling spotlights?

Arrange your ceiling spotlights at a regular distance of around 1.5 to 2 metres from each other so that you create uniform illumination of the room. In rectangular rooms, place the spots in an even grid pattern to avoid dark corners. Make sure that the spotlights are installed at least 50 cm away from the walls to avoid glare and shadow effects.

Can I also use the recessed ceiling spotlights outdoors?
